What is HRA?

House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a salary component paid to employees to meet rental expenses. Under Section 10(13A) it is exempt from income tax to the extent of the least of: (a) actual HRA received, (b) 50% of basic in metro / 40% in non-metro, (c) rent paid − 10% of basic.
